Teaser Excerpt for Ticket to Ride

Since Ticket to Ride doesn't come out until December, here is Ticket to Ride teaser:

“Holy shit, do you know who that is?”

Lieutenant Jack Reeves paused his pen in the middle of a notation about the crime scene and eyed Detective Albert Ramirez who stood beside him.

He followed Al’s gaze to the man sitting in the white plastic patio furniture chair. The man leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees and his head in his hands. He had short, straight blond hair done in some fancy salon fashion. Jack still visited barbers himself. Jack estimated the blond to be in his mid to late thirties, and though he admitted the guy was pretty, he was also a total stranger.

“No, should I?”

Al shot him a look that said he was a complete idiot. He supposed he was to the much younger detective. Jack, who had turned forty-three on his last birthday, felt positively ancient compared to thirty-three year old Al. He started jotting down his notes again.

“Chad Storm,” Al said.

A soap opera name if ever he’d heard one. He shrugged. “Actor?”

Al groaned. “No, lieutenant. Chad Storm.”

Like saying it again would clue him in. He shrugged again.

“The lead singer of Lightning.”

“Oh.” Jack nodded and closed his spiral notebook. “Rock music, right?”

Al tsked. “Yes.”

“I’m not really into that sort of thing.”

Al rolled his eyes. “Fifteen years ago Lightning was the hottest group out there.”

“Hmm. What about now?”

“Well, they broke up a few years ago, actually,” Al admitted. He turned to watch the body of the victim being lifted out of the bloody swimming pool. Then he turned back to Jack. “Can I question him?”

“No way. You’re too much of a fan boy. I’ll talk to Mr. Storm. You go talk to the maid.”

Al grimaced. “All right.”

Jack patted Al’s shoulder and walked past him toward the rock star. He grabbed a nearby plastic chair and brought it over next to Storm. He sat down and cleared his throat.

Storm straightened and looked at him. He had killer blue eyes, Jack quickly noted. “Hello,” he said softly.

“Chad Storm?”

“Yes.”

“Lieutenant Reeves, Homicide.” He opened his notebook again. “Is Chad Storm your real name?”

“Yes. Well, it is my legal name. I officially changed it when I formed Lightning.” Storm smiled a little crookedly. “You know, it went with the band name.”

“Uh-huh. What’s your real name then?”

Storm shifted uncomfortable and stared out at the reddish pool, looking vaguely green. “Do you really need that?”

Though it wasn’t a funny situation, Jack found himself smiling just a little. “It can’t be that bad.”

“It is.” He sighed. “Lester Chadwick.”

Jack blinked, wrote it down, and cleared his throat. “Okay, Mr. Storm, how did you know the victim?”

“We were…you know, a couple.” Storm looked away from the pool and bit his bottom lip. “Not anymore. I mean even be-before this.”

“I’m sorry for your loss.” Years ago when he’d began his career as a police officer he practiced those words. Practiced making them sound almost casual. A police officer wasn’t supposed to have any feelings. Or at least that’s what his first partner told him. He no longer needed to practice. The words just came out, though they still sounded hollow to Jack’s ears. “How long ago did you and Walters end your relationship?”

“I didn’t,” Storm said softly. “Mark did. He wanted his freedom, I guess.”

“To see other men?”

Storm nodded.

"How long ago was this, Mr. Storm?”

He met Jack’s gaze and his baby blue eyes were filled with an almost unbearable sorrow. “A few weeks ago. I found an airline reservation in the desk drawer. It was for a one-way ticket to Baltimore. I asked him about it and he said he was flying there to meet someone.”

Jack made notes. “And when was his ticket for?”

“Um, tonight actually. He was supposed to leave tonight.” He studied his folded hands a moment before looking up once more. “Do I need a lawyer?”

Jack gave him a reassuring police detective smile. “Not unless you have something to hide. You aren’t under arrest. You don’t have anything to hide, do you, Chad?”

“No. I didn’t kill Mark. I found him.”

He nodded. “When was the last time you saw Walters alive?”

Storm flinched. “I…last night I guess. This house is mine. I mean, I bought it when I was with the band and Mark lived here with me, but I told him he could just stay here until he left.”

“That was nice of you considering the circumstances,” Jack said dryly.

“I’ve known Mark since we were kids.” The man looked stricken. “Knew. How do you get used to it?”

“Used to what?”

“Talking about someone in the past tense. I don’t think I ever will.” Storm closed his eyes. His Adam’s apple bopped as he swallowed heavily. He buried his face in his hands then for a moment, exhaling slowly. When he looked up at Jack, his eyes were watery. “What else do you need to know?”

Jack was torn. He needed to ask a lot more questions of Chad Storm, but the man seemed at his breaking point and something about him tugged at Jack deep inside. Still, he had a job to do and that job was to find out if Chad Storm had killed his ex-lover, Mark Walters, or if not, who did.

“Chad, there you are!” A very tall, very thin, balding man with a goatee, probably in his mid-sixties, came rushing over to them and made a beeline for Chad. He shot Jack a look of disdain and grabbed Chad’s arms, hauling him out of the plastic chair and into his arms in a tight embrace. “I came over as soon as I got the message. Oh, God, it’s just terrible.”

Jack stood and cleared his throat. “And you are?”

“Ronald Epstein, a dear friend of Chad’s. And just who are you?”

“Lieutenant Jack Reeves, Homicide.”

“You’re questioning Chad without a lawyer?”

“He’s not under arrest.”

“It’s all right, Ron.” Chad pulled out of the man’s embrace and gave Jack a weak smile. “Is there any way we could continue this later, lieutenant? I’m feeling rather ill.”

“Very well. Tomorrow morning at ten?”

Chad nodded. “Yes, thank you.”

“If you have a few minutes, Mr. Epstein, I’d like to ask you a few questions.”

Epstein raised an eyebrow, but shrugged. “All right. But how about inside? I’d rather not have to look at,” he paused with a dramatic shudder and glanced toward the bloody water, “that.”

I Just Love Easy Edits

Got my edits yesterday for Ticket to Ride and they were a breeze! I can't tell you how happy that made me. Even though my cold is still hanging on a bit that put a giant smile on my face.

I also re-read Ticket to Ride from page one to the end and I have to say, I was very pleased with the result. The first couple of intimate scenes between my protags, Chad and Jack, I think, are among my best.

I can even forsee myself revisting these two in a future book or two.

Anyway, I cannot wait until its release in December to learn what everyone thinks.

Monday Again

This picture reminds me of my story, A Knight For All. Especially the way I would like to have written it. Notice the lady looks less than pleased. I've always said the men were more into each other. But anyway, here it is.

Eye Candy Sunday

I am sick, but here is the eye candy. Hopefully it will cheer someone up.

Ah...the Heartache

Recently, several people have mentioned my latest release, Sweet Reunion, is me returning to the angst-loving voice. I admit I did have a few lighter romances recently, most notably Car Wash and Beyond the Norm, but others were probably not up to the angst found in Perfect Man or Trust or even At Long Last.

When I set out to write Sweet Reunion, I didn't really think, wow I haven't written anything pain-filled lately. Honest! It's just that as I started writing Jason Sweet the character went that way for me.

It's true I do like angst. I think that is why Ava March and I work so well together. We both like the angst. Though, you know, once I suggested only half-kidding that we should co-author a book together and she didn't even respond, lol! Don't know what that says.

I have to admit though, that my next few books are probably going to be on the more heart-breaking side. I don't mean my next two releases, Ticket to Ride (you'll have to decide if this is angst-filled or not) and The Best Gift (it's a Christmas story remember), but rather the next several projects.

So, um, yeah, I will say now, that if angsty romances are not your thing, you might want to stay away from those set in Sutter's Bay for sure. So, as my dear friend, Jack, said the "angsty Shawn is back".

Tried for Progress and Failed

I actually opened the file for Twice in a Lifetime last night all prepared to write the next part. Proud of myself even. Unfortunately the version I had at home was not the latest version, that version was at work. Sigh.

I shall try again today.

I've been talking with some fellow authors (Devon and Ava) about turning Sutter's Bay into a series. Sutter's Bay is where Sweet Reunion takes place and also Twice in a Lifetime. I already have an idea for a third story involving the diner owner, Adam, who appears in Twice in a Lifetime. I briefly mentioned his hero-to-be character in Sweet Reunion for those that read that book or plan to. Anyway the hero for Adam would be Harris who broke up with Danny from Sweet Reunion. Trust me, Harris will have his work cut out for him convincing Adam to be with him.

Anyway, that would already make for three books set in my fictional bay town in Northern California. So why not more? I'll have to give it some thought. I've had readers ask me to consider doing a series before so it is an option.

Maybe I Should Quit...Or Not

Yesterday, I told my bff, Shayne, that I was giving up writing and he had a minor panic attack. Of course, I was kidding. Sort of.

I admit some days I do want to give up. Several times over the years I have fought with myself over this. Before I became published I once quit writing for many months. But that was before I became published. Now that I am, I don't think I will actually give it up, but sometimes the urge still enters my brain.

Oddly enough after I told Shayne that, this morning I did plot out a scene in my head for the current work in progress. I don't know, maybe I just needed to give voice to the doubts.

I also have a very, very teensy tiny (practically a fleck of dust, really) thought of doing another heterosexual interracial. Honestly, I haven't a clue when I would fit it in. I have so many stories already in line to be written. But, um, there you have it.

I am a little down at the moment which is likely accounting for my lack of creativity. The evil day job stresses continue and very recently there has been talk of down-sizing which just adds to the stress, doesn't it? And it certainly didn't help my mood that my beloved San Diego Chargers lost this week. Today is the official first day of Autumn and it is supposed to be over 100 here today. Anyway, these are my random thoughts for now.

I hope to get back into the writing soon and hopefully come out with an improved mood as well. I hope the rest of everyones week goes well.

Writing Blues

Nothing at all to report.

I'm having trouble motivating myself to write. I hope I get over it soon, but in the meantime, here's a nice picture.

Friday Updates

I'm not sure I know anymore than I did before what story to work on next but I definitely appreciate everyone's participation. You gave me something to think about.

I'm going to say that Barbara, Amy and the Falconer have all earned themselves a free ebook of mine of their choice. Ava has read everything being my CP and Devon has won before.

So the three of you, please email me and tell me which of my books you would like to receive. It can be a future book if you so desire but keep in mind you might have to remind me when the book you have chosen comes out.

Now, that brings me to a new announcement. My little Christmas story featuring new characters, Malcolm and Dustin, titled The Best Gift, has found a home and will be released from Amber Allure in December. Woo hoo! This will mean two releases from me in December.

You Decide

I'm making progress on the current work in progress, Twice in a Lifetime (I finished the first chapter). And already am looking to what comes next. Inspired by recent posts about future plans from my two good writer friends, Ava and Devon, I decided to pose the question here to whoever cares to vote on what should come next after I have completed Twice in a Lifetime. I'll leave this post up for the remainder of the week. On Friday, I will choose a random commenter to win a copy of whatever ebook of mine they would care to win.

Now please keep in mind these are very rough descriptions and they are subject to change:

Pieces: Three years ago, Patrick's lover commited suicide. He's had trouble coming to terms with it, but he's ready to take a chance on love again with the man he's always loved, his dead lover's cousin.

The Same Side (Other Side 2): Dr. Ray Carmichael and his lover, Nick Sorenson, have been involved in a relationship for months. Nick's working in a new department of the LAPD and working a dangerous undercover assignment. Ray's not thrilled, but keeps his mouth shut until Nick is seriously hurt. As Ray's dad has a heart attack and the family begins to fall apart, he pressures Nick to quit the force, which only pushes the man away. Maybe for good.

Undeniable: Lord Christian was a war hero, but he's emotionally broken and prefers isolation. His family sends him to the family country seat to recover where the butler, Hollington, is charged with his care. Hollington has always been in love with the sexy, smoldering and achingly vulnerable Christian, but love for another man is not done. Until one pain filled night, Hollington can no longer hide his need for Christian.

Never the One: Tyler Vanderholt and Eric Boone have been best friends and partners for years. They're both gay, but have never been more than friends. When a seriel killer strikes Wind's Canyon's elderly population, the two must find the killer and fast. As the murderer strikes again and again, the pressures wreak havoc on their personal life and they're turning to each other. (I need to have this done by March)

Waking the Prince: When an evil sorcerer threatens the life of the tiny baby prince he knows will kill him someday, the baby is hidden from all who would see him destroyed. Prince Roland is raised in poverty, kept away from all knowledge of his true identity. Until he is old enough and a warrior, Octavius, is sent to train him for his destiny. Roland falls in love with Octavius, but before he can learn the truth of who he is the sorcerer's minions discover him and he is put into a deep sleep. Who can wake the prince before it is too late?

My Next Release

Retired from the police force after a tragic shooting, Jason Sweet hasn’t been back to his hometown, Sutter’s Bay, for fifteen years. With his mother’s final days approaching, Jason returns to make peace with his mother and his past. Part of that past includes former best friend and lover, Danny Yarrow.

Danny’s satisfied with his life as a drama teacher at the local high school, but the one thing missing is the love of a good man. He’s only too happy to be reunited with Jason. They’ve both grown and changed since their broken teenaged relationship. Jason hasn’t had an easy time of it since leaving Sutter’s Bay, but Danny intends to convince his friend and former lover that when it comes to taking chances, their love is worth it.

Next weekend, Sweet Reunion will be released. This is my last release until December (at least as I write this), so when it comes out, I hope you will consider adding it to your collection.

Here is an Excerpt:

...Danny gasped for breath even as Jason’s tongue invaded his mouth. He’d thought for a moment he was going to have to make a move on Jason tonight like he had before when they were younger, so Jason knocking him to the mattress stunned him.

His heart slamming hard in his chest, Danny inched his hands underneath Jason’s shirt and fanned his fingers over the warm, soft flesh of his abdomen. Jason’s bare skin almost scorched him.

Jason growled low in his throat and flipped him so Danny lay on top. Jason grabbed Danny’s ass, grinding their pelvises together.

Danny moaned and reached for the buttons of Jason’s shirt. He slid the buttons from their holes and eased it off his shoulders, his fingertips grazing the hard muscles of Jason’s arms.

Tearing his lips from Danny’s, Jason rasped, “Have to get you naked.”

His cock grew impossibly harder and he couldn’t help agreeing naked would be better. “Yeah, you, too.”

Jason tugged off Danny’s shirt, tossing it aside even as he removed his own shirt the rest of the way. His fingers stroked over Danny’s nipples causing him to tremble all over with need. “You’re so beautiful, so damn sexy.”

“I was about to say that about you,” Danny said huskily.

“Condom and lube?” Jason asked, his lips moving to Danny’s throat to suck at the pulse there.

He pushed into Jason’s touch, seeking more. It was difficult to form a thought in his head while his lover’s hands roamed over his ass, let alone respond to the question. Danny closed his hand around the bulge in Jason’s trousers.

“Ah, fuck. Condom and lube, Danny?” he asked again, more urgently this time.

“Um, o-okay. H-hold on.” Danny pressed his lips to Jason’s, slipping his tongue inside. Their tongues twirled together. His eyes drifted closed as Jason’s fingers dug into his jean-clad ass.
He heard a sort of humming and realized it came from him. Even as his fingers itched to bury within the strands of Jason’s hair, Jason groaned and flipped him onto his back once more. He felt Jason yanking at his jeans without bothering to undo the snaps. He lifted up a little to make it easier.

Jason broke their kiss and abruptly stood. He bent over the bed and pulled off Danny’s jeans and shoes the rest of the way. His sneakers went flying.

Danny swallowed, startled by the blazing lust in Jason’s gaze. “In the bathroom, under the sink.”

His lover disappeared, so he used the opportunity to get rid of his boxer briefs. He threw them toward the straw hamper in the corner of his bedroom.

A fully naked Jason came back into his view and stood over him holding the lube. He’d already dressed his rigid cock with a condom. He dropped the tube of lube onto Danny’s stomach.
Jason knelt on the bed beside him.

Danny grabbed the tube and squirted a large amount into the palm of his hand. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from Jason. “Come closer.”

The man did as requested and Danny planted a kiss on his soft lips before he reached for his lover’s erection, rubbing the lube over the sheathed hard cock. It jumped in his hands even as he swirled a fingertip around the fat head. Smiling, he stroked up and down the length.

Jason lowered his lips to Danny’s, but the kiss was over sooner than Danny wanted, a fleeting thing. Jason rubbed his thumb over Danny’s bottom lip. “Easy, Danny. Let’s go slow, I want to taste you again first.”

“T-taste me?”

“Uh-huh.” Jason slid down his body and placed himself between Danny’s quivering legs. Danny expected Jason to pull his dick into his mouth, so he was a little startled when Jason hands raised Danny’s ass cheeks and his tongue dove in. This was something they hadn’t done fifteen years ago...

Having one of those days or a couple of those days I guess where I just don't feel the writing, you know? I've started my newest work in progress and my plan is to get it finished and off to its proper place by mid-October. Barring any prolonged bouts of feeling "meh" I should be able to do that.

I did manage to get about 2,500 words done on the first chapter this week, so it isn't a total loss but instead of doing my usual writing at lunch at the EDJ I read instead.

At this point, I am not sure how long Twice in a Lifetime will be. I called it that because one of the heroes had a really great, true-love relationship that was tragically cut short, so his meeting the other hero in this story is his second chance at true love, so Twice in a Lifetime. My heroes are Jude and Rex. You will meet Jude in Sweet Reunion due out next week. He's the flamboyant British florist in that story. Rex is a cowboy from Texas who just happens to be the town's new vet. There will be some angst in this one.

Anyway, I have nothing else to report at the moment. I hope everyone has a great weekend.
And yes, because football season has begun I just had to post a picture of my Chargers

Favorite Heroes

Apparently I'm in a wondering mood this week because today's topic is favorite heroes. Also I love to stimulate discussion even if it is by just a handful of people who happen to actually appear interested in the happenings here. Thanks for that.

So, my question for those who care to answer, who are some of your all time favorite fictional heroes? I know it is hard to narrow it down to just a few, but do try if you can.

I'll start out the discussion with some I can come up with off the top of my own curly head.

1) I have two favorite heterosexual historical romance heroes and they are both heroes by the same author and they are Ian from Julie Garwood's The Secret and Geoffrey from Julie Garwood's Gentle Warrior.

2) Favorite hero from a contemporary heterosexual would be Harry Trevelyan from Jayne Ann Krentz's Absolutely, Positively.

3) I must confess I don't read a whole lot of historical gay fiction. Most of what is out there sort of bores me because I'm just not a fan of endless historical details in my enjoyment reading. If I want to read about that I will pick up a history book. I myself write when the fancy takes me "historical light" but I will say that I have a definite soft spot for Lord Oliver from Ava March's Bound series.

4) And finally I must list a few favorites in the contemporary gay fiction. I absolutely adore Keaton (Bit) Reynolds from J.L. Langley's Without Reservations. I love both Sean and Dan from Josh Lanyon's The Dark Horse and The White Knight. I love Sean from AM. Riley's The Elegant Corpse.

5) And for Sci-Fi I am going with Aiden from My Fair Captain.

Naturally I love many more heroes and books but this is what I could come up with and that stand out with me right now.
So how about it, who are some of your favorites?

Only Wondering

Just a non-scientific survey for my own curiosity

1) If I read a bad review on a review site for a book by an author I have never read before I will probably not read that book.

Yes or No

2) If I read a good review on a review site for a book by an author I have never read before I will probably buy the book.

Yes or No.

3) Even if I see bad reviews on a book by an author I almost always enjoy I will still buy their book.

Yes or No.

4) I rarely read reviews on review sites as I know my own likes and dislikes and can generally figure out from reading trusted authors or blurbs and excerpts whether I will like the book.

Yes or No.

Just thought I’d throw these questions out. Feel free to add your thoughts as well. I was talking not that long ago with someone and noted before I became a published writer myself I never read reviews of any books I had bought. I just chose books based on either having read the author before or liking the sound of the book. The first book I read by J.L. Langley for instance was Without Reservations. I just liked the cover and the sound of it so I bought it and I have been a huge fan of hers ever since.

Random Updates Part 23

Two things.

1) Kathleen has not emailed me yet for her prize. Kathleen, are you still wanting it? Please let me know at authorshawnlane@gmail.com

2) I was talking to my CP the other day, Ava March, about an idea I had for a fairy tale that would have princes instead of a prince and princess and instead of discouraging me from writing it she actually ENCOURAGEd me to write it. Can you believe that? Anyway, it would be a take-off of Sleeping Beauty called, Waking the Prince. I sort of thought of it when I saw Samhain asking for fairy tale stories for their anthology next year. Will I write it for them? Not sure. Honestly, I haven't had much luck with Samhain. But I might write the story anyway.

Ah, A Long Weekend

Nothing all that new and exciting to report.

Beyond the Norm seems to be doing well in its first couple days of release so I am pleased about that.

I got my galley for Sweet Reunion so I will be going over that over the long weekend.

And my few days of rest after completing Ticket to Ride must officially come to an end and work begins in earnest on Twice in a Lifetime.

Also the most generous Barbara of the fabulous blog, Happily Forever After, who did some work on Ava March's blog has generously offered to tweak mine if I so desire and of course I do. So watch out for a new look sometime soon (got to figure out what I want).
