The moment former art teacher Drew Richards spots gorgeous African-American lawyer Mark Stevens at a party, he is intrigued. Though rebuffed at first, a persistent Drew convinces Mark they can be friends at least.
After the death of his partner, Mark buried himself in work, a habit he can’t seem to break...until he meets Drew. The short, dark-haired Drew is not Mark’s usual sort, but he finds the man way too appealing, and before he knows it, he and Drew become more than friends.

His One And Only by Shawn Lane, Excerpt
I'm doing a blog post tomorrow over at Ava's on the story of Most Likely to Succeed, so today I'm going to post an excerpt of the very soon to be released His One and Only.
“Hey, Mark, can you take this call later this afternoon?” Travis Anderson asked, after knocking briefly on Mark’s closed office door the following Wednesday and just opening the door without waiting for an answer.
Mark looked up from his pleadings at the tall blond man. Along with Travis, Mark and Nathan had formed their law firm, Anderson, Llewellyn and Stevens, a few years after they had finished law school. All three men had become friends after meeting in law school and forming a bond over being gay.
There seemed to be an epidemic of romance at the firm lately as both Travis and Nathan had hooked up with guys from the office. An epidemic, frankly, Mark intended to avoid. Fortunately, as far as he could tell, his partners had already discovered the only eligible hot gay bachelors at the firm.
He shook his head. “Sorry, can’t. Ask Nathan or maybe one of the associates.”
Travis’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
He smiled patiently. “I won’t be in the office this afternoon so I can’t take your call.”
“Oh. You have a trial or a hearing?”
“No.”
“Client meeting?”
“No.” He wouldn’t have believed it, but he was actually enjoying the dumbfounded expression on Travis’s face. They all knew him too well.
“Then—”
“I’m going to be in Newport Beach.”
Travis frowned and sat in the chair directly in front of Mark’s desk. “What’s in Newport Beach? Potential new client?”
“Definitely not. I don’t think Drew could afford us.”
“Drew? Who the hell is Drew?”
Mark grinned. “He is the reason I’ll be in Newport Beach. I’m having coffee with him.”
“Coffee? What for?”
“You’re a brilliant lawyer, counselor, you figure it out.”
Travis continued to frown, but then his eyes widened a little. “Are you saying, like a date?”
“Yes, like a date. Furthermore, this is the second time.”
“Really?”
“Is that so surprising?” Mark scowled. “That someone would want to see me?”
Travis put up his hands. “No, no. I’m not surprised someone would want to see you; I’m just surprised you’d want to see them. Mark, you don’t date. And in the middle of a work day, no less?”
He nodded. “I think Drew is trying to keep it casual. At first anyway.”
“Well, so tell me about this guy.”
Mark glanced at his watch. Saved. “Can’t, if I’m going to make it in time, I have to go now. Besides, it’s a bit premature. If things progress anywhere, and I’m not sure they will, I’ll consider telling you about him.” He stood and grabbed his suit coat off the coat rack in his office.
“Will you be back later?”
“Probably. He only gets a half hour for lunch.”
Mark left Travis in his office staring after him.

Much Ado
I'm not sure what I have to say today.
His One and Only comes out in just over a week. I'm starting the contest to win a copy on Monday. I've also volunteered a copy for Stumbling Over Chaos which I'll let you know the details for that if you don't win the one from my site.
It's hard to believe, but also a little bit of a relief, really, but this is the last book of the Only Forever series. The paperback collection should be out in July and yes, I'll be offering a contest for a copy of the paperback collection if anyone is interested.
My angsty Pieces is out in July and then I think I'll probably go a month (August) at least without a release. I'm still waiting on a release date for The Beach House but I know it won't be August.
Twice in a Lifetime isn't going as fast as I would like but I've always wanted a fall release for it anyway. This is part of a new series. I had promised/hinted last year after Sweet Reunion that I would consider turning the town of Sutter's Bay into fodder for several books. Twice in a Lifetime is number two, and I introduce the guys for number three in Twice in a Lifetime, Adam and Galaxy (you read that right). There should be at least a fourth in this series as well. This series won't be as light as the Only Forever series though.

Excerpt Day - His One and Only
A little earl as I have a party Saturday at my house. Enjoy.
Drew kept an eye on the clock in his family’s gift shop in Cannery Village. It was nearly two. He wondered if Mark would even show. Part of him figured he would not. He’d been sort of surprised Mark had agreed in the first place.
The gift shop, owned by his mother and stepfather, was one of those typical shops one found in seaside harbors. It contained T-shirts, sweatshirts, California knickknacks, sea life statues, and pictures…basic souvenir type stuff. It had been in the Village for years, since Drew was just a boy. Just then, the shop only had two old ladies as customers gazing at the hats in the corner that read Newport Beach.
“Ma, I’m going to take my lunch break if it’s okay,” Drew called to his mother, who was in the back area.
“Okay, honey, I’ll be right out.”
Drew waited for his mother to appear behind the counter and then he hurried from the shop and down the few doors to Java Central.
A perusal of the small coffee shop indicated what he’d feared. No Mark. He sighed with disappointment. Even though he expected it, he still couldn’t help feeling cheated.
“Hey, Drew, you want your usual?” Louise asked. She was a college student and pretty with red hair and freckles.
“Yeah, thanks,” Drew said, walking up to the counter to wait for his coffee. When the little bells tingled above the door he didn’t even turn around. He just paid his money and moved over to add cream.
“May I help you, sir?” Louise asked.
“I’d like a regular coffee, please.”
Drew turned quickly. “Mark!”
Mark raised a dark eyebrow. He was dressed in a navy suit and carried a briefcase. He really was handsome in a very polished sophisticated way. His eyebrows looked like they’d been shaped even.
“You did say two on Wednesday at Java Central, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, yeah, I did.” Drew grinned. “I’ll be over at that table by the window.” He took his seat and waited for Mark to come over and join him. When he did, Drew couldn’t keep his happiness from showing.
“You look pleased with yourself,” Mark commented.
“No, I’m actually pleased with you.”
“How so?” Mark reached for a packet of real sugar, not the fake stuff, Drew noticed. He added it to his black coffee.
Drew shrugged. “Honestly, I expected you to stand me up. I’m glad I was wrong.”
“I almost did. This isn’t exactly convenient for me.” Mark glanced around the shop. “Where do you work anyway?”
“At a gift shop a few doors down.”
“You going to college?”
He laughed. “How old do you think I am?”
“I don’t know.” Mark shrugged, stretching his suit coat across his broad shoulders. “Not much over twenty-one.”
“Wrong. I’m twenty-seven and my college days are over. I have a degree from the California Institute of Art.”
Mark frowned, clearly in disapproval. “Then what are you doing working at a gift shop?”
Taking a sip of his coffee, Drew shook his head. “The shop belongs to my parents. Last year my stepdad was diagnosed with cancer. He’s having trouble running the shop so I’m helping my mother out for now. Before that I’d been teaching art at the Institute. I’ve had to take a leave of absence and move back to Newport Beach.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. Any relationship with your father?”
Drew shook his head and reached for another little cup of half-and-half to add to his coffee. “I don’t have a father. Well, I don’t mean I was hatched or anything. Mom was artificially inseminated. No clue who the donor was.”
“It’s very admirable of you to give up your life to help them.”
“I don’t consider it giving up my life. Anyway, what about you? Why don’t you tell me about yourself.”
“Me? I’m boring as hell.” Mark took a long sip of his coffee.
Drew smiled. “I know you work all the time. Why is that?”
“I have a stressful job. Law work requires a lot of hours.”
Drew tapped his foot on the table leg as the song played overhead. It was one of his favorite new songs. “Well, yeah, maybe it does, but what about Nathan and…um…the other one.”
“Travis.”
“Yes. They’re partners in the firm with you, right?” At Mark’s nod, he continued, “No one speaks of them being workaholics.”
Mark snorted. “I’m not a workaholic.”
Drew smirked. “No? Seems like everyone says you are. You don’t have a boyfriend.”
“Neither do you. Or do you?” Mark’s eyebrows shot up.
He laughed. “No, I don’t. Had one a few years ago but he dumped me.”
Mark eyed him. “He dumped you?”
“Is that so hard to believe?” he asked, amused. “You want to hear something scandalous?”
The other man raised only one of his an eyebrows this time. Sort of like Spock from Star Trek. Drew liked the way he did it. Sexy as hell. “Yes, go for it.”
“My boyfriend was one of the teachers at the school. I mean, one of my professors back when I was a student. I guess he liked the excitement of being with a student, and when I wasn’t any longer he decided to end it.” He laughed.
“You sound more amused than hurt.”
Drew nodded. “Yeah, I guess that’s true. To be honest, it’s not like I ever thought he was my happily-ever-after guy or anything. I wasn’t in love with him. What about you? A good-looking guy like you must have had a boyfriend or two in his past. What are you? In your thirties?”
Mark glanced away. “Sure, I had a boyfriend I cared a lot about once.”
He wanted to ask for details, but something in Mark’s body language told him not to press it. Drew pushed aside his natural nosiness and glanced at his watch. “I’m afraid my lunch break is just about over and I have to get back to the shop.”
“Okay. I’ve finished my coffee anyway.”
“Listen, thanks a lot for coming all the way here. I know it was a big deal for you.” Drew brushed at the lock of hair that had fallen into his eyes. “Maybe you’d like to come again next Wednesday?”
Mark stood. He looked doubtful and Drew tried to hide his disappointment. “Maybe. I’ll think about it.”
Drew smiled and stuck out his hand to shake Mark’s. “Thanks for coming. I hope to see you again.”
The man did shake his hand but made no promises.

Thursday Updates
I am very close indeed to being done with The Beach House. I have one scene left in the current chapter which I shall most certainly finish today and then one final resolution chapter. I thought I'd fit it into one but alas I need one more. I think I am still on target to be finished by May 31.
That will mean beginning June 01, I will be giving my writing attention full time to Jude and Rex (Twice in a Lifetime). Jude was the British florist with green hair in Sweet Reunion for anyone who read that book. Many readers have been asking for his story. The good news since I am already a few chapters into that one I should have it finished by the end of June.
Not sure what, if anything, I will post tomorrow, but Saturday I might post an excerpt from June's release, His One and Only, the final Only Forever story. Skip it if you don't like to read excerpts before the books comes out.

I'm Back
Here I am in Las Vegas:
These are some photos of Bellagio, outside with the dancing water and of their spring garden:
And finally the deadzone. It looks nicer than it is, trust me. This is where we stayed at stateline between Nevada and California. No internet, cracked and pealing wallpaper, stained carpets, and various other questionable things.
I had a lovely time but ended up losing several hundred dollars to Las Vegas. "O" was pretty cool, though somewhat bizarre.
Today I received the cover for His One and Only. There it is to the side on the right. I must say Drew is totally wrong. He looks NOTHING like the character in the book. But the guy representing Mark, the attorney is nice.

Some News
Okay lots of news today!
I have finished the last Only Forever story, His One and Only. We’re looking at a June 20, 2010 release for that one. That concludes the series so as Shayne would say, go me!
I also now have a release date for Pieces and that is July 18, 2010.
Also sometime in July will be the release of Only Forever, the entire series in a paperback collection.
Sometime in the near future, I’ll be posting an interview with author, Andi Anderson. So keep your eyes peeled for that.
Speaking of interviews, I sent the questions to Ashtyn Long and I’m just waiting for his answers. I know he’s been busy with work and life, but have no fear the interview is still on the horizon.

Monday Updates
Okay, let's see.
Don't forget to enter to win a copy of Still the One, releasing sometime this coming weekend. It is part of the best friends pax, From This Moment On, which includes five stories, but can also be purchased individually. The contest runs through Friday, April 9th.
Talked to the BFF Sunday for a couple hours or so and he's doing better but is still fighting his illness. Getting a little better every day though.
Got my galley for Still the One and I'm looking forward to its release. I think you will find it to be a cute, sweet story (no worries there is sex).
Made a bit of progress on His One and Only on Friday but not much over the weekend. Still I suspect I only have two-three chapters to go before I have that one finished.

Happy Friday
I feel like a broken record. I have nothing to report. Really. Sigh.
It's been two weeks, well pretty close, since I sent Pieces out to find a home. And I am still waiting. Worse than that I could be waiting a lot longer. I know it will eventually be released with someone so I have no worries there, but I'd like to get it nailed down so I can announce it. I'm proud of Pieces . For those who are wondering it's name comes from the "pieces" of the heart. You know your heart is broken into pieces. Don't know why but I thought it fit the story. It's an angstier, darker story than some of the others I've written lately. One hero, Patrick, is still dealing with the suicide of his boyfriend and his guilt over that.
I'm also still waiting for the cover of May's release, Only His Heart. I'm sure you've noticed it's still blank there on the right of the blog. Trace has been working on some other May covers over the last couple of days so I am hoping mine will show up soon.
I'm still working on His One and Only. Poor guys, Drew and Mark, have yet to have sex. They'll get to it eventually, lol.
Kevin's Interlude should be posted Saturday.

Updates On a Tuesday
Okay, so I haven't yet finished Kevin's Interlude story that I will be posting on the blog. I thought I'd get it done over the weekend but well...I didn't. Within the week it will be posted.
Thanks again for the birthday wishes.
I did get a message from Shayne who very sweetly signed on just to wish me happy birthday. He says his fever isn't quite as bad so he hopes that means he is on the mend. I know he has another doctor's appointment on Wednesday where the doctor will evaluate whether or not he has made any improvement. I know both Jack and Shayne are hoping to avoid him having to be hospitalized. A big hug and kiss to Josh too for keeping me updated on Shayne while Jack has been busy caring for him.
Now that the birthday is over, I need to get back to work. As you all know I have a lot of stories I need to finish, not the least of which is the fourth and final Only story, His One and Only.

Alas a New Week Begins

A New Beginning
Well, as you all know, I finished Still the One over the weekend. I had intended to give myself a day or two to goof off (not weeks on end), but as it is I did not. I've already started, His One and Only , the final book in the Only series, with Drew and Mark.
Along with that I plan to work on Twice in a Lifetime, Jude's story. So those two stories are where my energies will lie for the most part over the next few weeks.

The Nothing New Day
This is one of those days when I really have nothing to say. Sad, isn't it? I'd decided I was going to try to post something pretty much every day but what happens to days like this when there is nothing to report?
Hmm. I am anxious to finish Still the One. I love Dusty and Malcolm but others are calling to me. The good news is I am working toward their satisfying conclusion and I don't anticipate having any trouble finishing this weekend.
I'm waiting on two covers at present. I submitted my cover form for Still the One so I am waiting for that and of course the cover for Calvin and Matt's story, Only His Heart.
Once this one is out of the way, I intend to continue writing Jude's story and also to start the final "only" book, His One and Only starring Drew and Mark. Yes, I named Drew after our Drew. I have a tendency to name characters after some people I know and many of the characteristics of people I know, as well as myself, end up in the book.
On Saturday, the excerpt posted will be from Ava March's upcoming release, From Afar. I suggest you don't miss this book if you are an Ava fan because it will be a long time before her next one comes out. Isn't that right, Ava? lol.

Release Date News
Only His Heart will be released May 23, 2010.
In other "only" news, eventually the stories in the series will form a paperback collection to be called Only Forever. Not sure about timing on that yet as there is a distinct possibility of a fourth story called His One and Only.
