Until Next Week...

Happy Halloween!

I'm going out of town for a few days.

I'll be going to San Diego. For those of you who have never been there you are missing out. Beautiful, wonderful place. Hopefully, you will all think of me on Sunday and how I am sitting in Qualcomm Stadium watching the San Diego Chargers. Let's cross our fingers that they win.

I am not taking the laptop this time and therefore will have no access to the internet. None. This is hard for me, let me tell you. I go through withdrawls. This means no Sunday Night Eye Candy.

I won't be back until Monday night, so I hope to post Part one of Damian's Feast (Jake and Damian's Thanksgiving story) on Monday night. If not, for sure Tuesday morning.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

The Squire, an excerpt

As most of you know, my first story published was The Squire, a winner of Amber Quill's 2008 (and last) Amber Heat Contest. If you haven't read it, here is an excerpt. Or if you just want to remember it fondly. I make no pretenses otherwise, I write "historical light".

Duncan squatted next to the fire the servant had thoughtfully started in Sir William’s room. He was alone, but expected the knight any time. Sir William had ordered Duncan to the room while he assessed the welfare of his father.

Yawning, he glanced around the room. It wasn’t quite as large as the baron’s chamber, but it was the next largest in the castle. Besides the fireplace, Sir William had a bed big enough for a giant to sleep in. Well, mayhap that was a slight exaggeration, but it was surely the biggest bed Duncan had ever seen. There was a small table and chairs in one corner of the room, as well as a chest of drawers with a basin on it, and a wardrobe where Sir William’s clothes were kept.

He sat down on the fur spread in front of the fire and stretched out his long legs. His cock had perked up thinking about Sir William so he adjusted his braies. He wished he had time to take care of it, but with Sir William bound to appear at any moment there wasn’t time.

Sighing heavily, he rolled his weary shoulders. He had a knot in the left shoulder blade, too. The door opened. He turned his head to view Sir William walking in. For a moment, Duncan just stared, unable to stop the awe that swept over him each and every time he saw the knight. His blond hair was tousled as though Sir William had been running his fingers through it. Duncan licked his lips, wishing he could run his own fingers through the soft locks.

Hands braced beneath him, he stood. “How is your father, sir?”

Sir William’s blue eyes looked sad, though he attempted a slight smile. “He’s still alive, though failing rapidly. I wonder if he will last another fortnight.”

Duncan grabbed one of the chairs by the table and carried it to the fire. “Come sit here, sir. I’ll rub your shoulders for you.”

“They are a bit stiff.” Sir William plopped down. The chair groaned under the sudden weight.

Duncan stared at his knight’s broad shoulders. “Why don’t you remove your tunic and jerkin, sir?”

Sir William nodded, peeled off the garments, then leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes. There was nothing Duncan liked better than touching Sir William’s bare skin. It was sheer torture, of course, but a torture he couldn’t resist inflicting on himself. His palms rested on the bare shoulder and he bit his lip to keep from sighing out loud. The flesh was warm and it sent an instant tingle to his already aroused cock.

Sir William rolled his neck and moaned a little. His fingers trembling, Duncan rubbed the muscles in the knight’s upper arms. “A little harder, Duncan.”

Oh, God. His balls tightened painfully. He increased the pressure of his fingers and drifted back up to the shoulders. He closed his own eyes and inhaled the spicy masculine scent of Sir William. As though they had a will of their own, his hands inched down to massage the knight’s muscular chest. Shaking, he paused, waiting to see if Sir William would protest the bold touch. When the man kept his eyes closed, Duncan grew bolder still and used his index finger to gently stroke a nipple.

He gritted his teeth against the impossible hardness of his cock. If he didn’t stop, he was going to come. Yet, he couldn’t force his fingers to leave the object of his fascination.

Sir William let out a low growl and jumped up, whipping around to face Duncan. Duncan shrank back, afraid the knight would strike him for the liberties. Instead, Sir William wrapped those muscular arms around him and covered Duncan’s lips with his own.

Stunned, he didn’t react at first, standing stiffly under the assault. His mind couldn’t adjust to the fact his dream lover kissed him. Before he could respond, Sir William ended the kiss and pulled him to the fur in front of the fire.

“Sir William—”

Romantic

I just find this picture quite alluring and wanted to post it.

So, still really nothing to report.

I am working on a story called, Only in His Dreams. I referred to this a week or so ago when I mentioned I had thought of another idea for a story. My "plan" is to have this one done and off for publication no later than the middle of November. So I am on the fast track for this story.

I am working on Damian's Feast for posting next week on the blog. Once that story is completed, I'll start the next one, and on and on until all four November stories are posted.

Once I have Only in His Dreams completed, I will return full time to Twice in a Lifetime and Waking the Prince.

That's pretty much it for news.

Stone of Wrath, an excerpt

Jedidiah Mason knew rookie firefighters were often given cleanup duty. He shouldn’t be surprised or irritated by having it now. But he was so tired he was ready to drop right there in the rubble of the still smoldering abandoned office building.
He leaned against the heavy wooden broom he’d been using to sweep up debris. Could he fall asleep standing up? How long had he been working on the site? The call had come in at two Saturday afternoon. It had to be close to midnight now.
“It’s okay, kid, you’re done for the day,” his supervisor, Firefighter Nels Henderson, said, clapping him on the shoulder. “We’ve got the rest. You’ve been working hard.”
Jed perked up. “Really? You sure?”
“You’re practically asleep anyway. Go back to the station with Jonesy. You’re off the next three days, right?”
“Yeah and I think I’ll sleep through two and a half of them.” Jed grinned and waved when Henderson walked away. He ran a grimy hand over his sweaty face. He needed a long, hot shower.
Jed was just turning away when something glittered in the rubble. He crouched down, tilting his head. Maybe his tired eyes were playing tricks on him. Now he saw nothing.
“Jed, you coming?” Jonesy called from next to the smaller of the two fire trucks.
There!
A flash of dark yellow. Reaching out, his fingers closed around something about the size of half a fist. Jed lifted the heavy rock-like object.
“Mason, get over here now!” Jonesy yelled.
Jed stood and pocketed the rock. He hurried to the engine, tossed the broom inside and swung up onto the back. The driver started the red truck and pulled away from the curb.
* * * * *
Jed slammed his locker door closed. He’d changed out of his uniform into his jeans and black t-shirt but hadn’t bothered with the shower. Too anxious to get home. He could shower there.
He reached in and fingered the yellow rock he’d transferred to the front pocket of his jeans. Truth was he couldn’t seem to stop touching it. It was just a dumb old rock, wasn’t it? Jed pulled it out to look at it again. It was singed and covered in ashes and soot. But there was something about it.
It looked almost like a gemstone. Hell, who in their right mind would drop a big gemstone like that in an old abandoned building? If it really were a gemstone, from the size it would be worth a lot. Weren’t there a couple of yellow gems? November’s birthstones. Citrine and golden topaz or something. His mother and sisters watched the shopping channels. They probably knew. He’d clean it up and show it to them next time he saw them. Shrugging, he stuck it back in his pocket and left the locker room.
“Hey, kid, you going home?”
Jed glanced to his right. Standing next to the paramedic truck was the captain, Adam Denton. Captain Denton was just the sort of man Jed found attractive. Rugged and muscular. He figured the captain was in his forties. And married with children. Of course. Not that Jed would let anyone at the station know he was gay. Actually very few people in his life knew.
“Yes, unless you need me to stay?” Jed prayed the answer would be no. He would stay though, if they needed him. Dog-tired or not.
Captain Denton smiled. “Nope. Go home. See you Wednesday.”
"Good night.”
Jed walked out of the station into the back area where the men parked their cars. He found his Harley, put on his helmet and prepared to drive home. His thigh vibrated.
What the fuck?
He kept his cell phone in his back pocket. The stone? Couldn’t be that. He put his hand over the pocket. Nothing. Must have imagined it. Geez, he really was tired.
Jed pulled out of the parking lot and headed for the freeway. It was just a short drive to his apartment near Old Town San Diego. Jed, born and raised in San Diego, had considered animal training for the zoo or the wild animal park as a career. In the end, he decided, though he loved animals, he wanted to help humans more.
Just as he exited the ramp that would take him down the street to his apartment, his thigh thrummed. He nearly lost control but he managed to keep the Harley on the road. He stopped at a red light and glanced down at the pocket with the stone. Nothing again. He couldn’t have imagined the second time. Or could he? He was really tired.
The pocket heated his thigh and glowed yellow. Jed stared.
Honk!
Damn. He drove away from the stop and made the right turn into the driveway of his apartment building. Parking the Harley under his carport, Jed grasped the rock through his jeans. It was still warm. Had the fire earlier kept it that hot? Simple explanation, of course. But then why had it been cool when he picked it up from the rubble?

Oh No.....

Somebody stop me. Seriously.

On the way to work this morning I got another idea.

This one would be on the sweeter side with not much angst and would involve a slightly geeky African American computer nerd working at a law firm with a big crush on one of the partners, a gorgeous, blond-god. I've already got the names too, Darrell Lincoln and Travis Anderson.

When would I find time to squeeze this in? Sigh. Don't know, but I will manage. Somehow.

My Decision

So, I have made a decision on the free November stories. I know I said I was going to wait for the whole month for voting but since it seems to have pretty much died anyway, I'm going to announce my decision.

November is made up of four weeks and since I gave you the choice of four couples I have decided to feature all of them in their own free short story.

Week 1) Damian's Feast featuring Jake and Damian
Week 2) A Sweet Thanksgiving featuring Jason and Danny
Week 3) Most Likely to Have a Successful Holiday featuring Clark and Thomas
Week 4) Thanksgiving At Long Last featuring Scott and Preston

So I hope you will come back each week to read the stories. Most likely they will be posted over a few days rather than all on one day.

Now, for the first week, I am going to be out of town October 31, 2009-November 02, 2009 (Go San Diego Chargers--I am going to their game) and I will try to get the first part of Damian's Feast posted on the evening of November 02, but it might end up being November 03.

Waking the Prince

I am making progress on my fairytale m/m romance, Waking the Prince. There's my representation of the kiss. Probably a little more risque then it will be on paper, lol.
Yes, I am still working on other stories including Jude's. Right now the muse wants the pretty prince, Roland, and his hunky warrior, Magnus.

In Memoriam

As people march in Washington D.C. for gay rights, I thought it appropriate to dedicate today's post to the memory of Matthew Shepard who died October 12, 1998 from injuries he sustained from a severe beating because he was gay.

So to Matthew's memory and to all people who were the victims of crimes of hate.

So Far....

The choices for the couples involved in the Thanksgiving story are:
1) Scott and Preston
2) Jake and Damian
3) Clark and Thomas
4) Jason and Danny
So for we have three each for Clark and Thomas and Jake and Damian, and one each for Jason and Danny and Scott and Preston.
There is still time to put in your two cents.
Now, you may wonder why I didn't include some other couples from my stories. I've explained that Noah and Charlie and Kevin and Michael are reserved for Christmas stories.
Some of my stories are historicals and therefore would not celebrate Thanksgiving.
And as far as Craig and Alex from Perfect Man, Brad and Justin from Trust, and Jed and Topaz from Stone of Wrath...well they all have contractual concerns. Alas.
Anyway, if you have an opinion, let me know.

The Magic of Fan Mail

This past week I have received three fan emails. This is a lot for me in one week so I have to say I was quite pleased.

The most recent one was from a lovely woman who just happened to pick up my print book, Lawyers in Love, when she was purchasing another book on Amazon. She read and fell in love with the first story, At Long Last, and was thrilled to discover Scott and Preston had a sequel, Until the End of Time, which she went to Amber Quill's website and purchased.

I thought this was pretty cool. Anyway, weeks like these convince me I must be doing something a little right. They help enormously when something untoward comes my way.

I know there are probably more readers out there that enjoy an author's books that never send an email. I, myself, have only sent one or two as I recall, though, I certainly have loved books by authors I have never contacted. But when someone takes the time to do so, it's special. So, thanks to those who do and to those who don't but still like my books!

Noticed Something Interesting

So today, while on the site, Goodreads, I noticed that someone had rated The Best Gift 4 stars.

Now, normally, I would be fairly pleased with this rating as according to the site that means "really liked it". But as anyone who has been following me knows, The Best Gift does not come out until December 20, 2009.

I wonder how this reader got into my computer to read the story.

Ah, well, perhaps she is rating the cover.

What I'm Doing

As I've made clear here, I have no "official" releases in October and November. Sort of weird for me to go two months without a release, but that's just how it ended up happening.

Anyway, as you know I'll be posting free stories in November and December, as well as my official releases in December.

So, you may wonder (or not), what the heck I am doing in the meantime.

I am still writing Twice in a Lifetime, Jude's story, and the second book in the Sutter's Bay series (Sweet Reunion being the first). I just broke the 6,000 word mark and am on the third chapter. Have no idea what the length will be on this when it is finished.

And also, I am working on a medieval paranormal story with good versus bad and all that. I don't have a concrete name for it at this point. It's called "Sinful" but I suspect that is a temporary name soon to be changed.

Barring any major difficulties these will be out early 2010.

A Different Sort of Contest

As anyone who actually pays attention to me knows, I am going to be posting some free Christmas stories in December involving the characters from Pulling Away and Car Wash.
As if I don't have enough to write already I'm thinking about posting a free story in November for the American holiday of Thanksgiving. I don't have any releases until December so I like to remind everyone I am still here. Anyway, so I a going to let you decide among my contemporary stories listed below who you would like the free Thanksgiving story to be about.

1) Scott Trask and Preston Reynolds from At Long Last and Until the End of Time

2) Jake Fields and Damian Grant from Jake's Regret

3) Clark Sterling and Thomas Harrigan from MostLikely to Succeed

4) Jason Sweet and Danny Yarrow from Sweet Reunion

Just leave a comment on the blog and by November I will decide based on comments left here. I'll post this once in a while to remind everyone to vote.
