Wanting Sam is released

Check SpellingSam Kane's ordinary life changes when he rescues aspiring actress, Krystal Blake, after she is dumped by her boyfriend in the middle of Hollywood without a place to live. He allows her to stay with him and their mutual attraction is hot and instantaneous. They have nothing in common as far as bleached-blond computer geek Sam can tell and he can't imagine what she would see in someone like him. Krystal has never known anyone quite like Sam and though she knows she may be moving too fast for the insecure Sam, Krystal can't stop herself from wanting Sam.
My latest heterosexual erotic romance has been released by Ellora's Cave. It's also my last I think, at least for the foreseeable future, as I am devoting my career right now exclusively to writing gay romances.
I hope readers enjoy Sam and Krystal as much as I loved writing them.

February 24, 2009

So, come July, I should have a print anthology available from Amber Quill. The title is Lawyers In Love and will include my stories, At Long Last, Most Likely To Succeed and Car Wash.

Sometime in the next month or so I am included in the Topaz Birthstone print book for Stone of Wrath as well. I think it's called Torrid Topaz and includes all the birthstone books for November, which is how I got in there. I don't think Ellora's Cave normally put gay romances into print form.

Later this week is my last heterosexual release, Wanting Sam, from Ellora's Cave. I received my author copies yesterday.

And in just a little over a week, Jake's Regret will be released, as part of the Amber Pax, I Remember You.

And in boring writing news, I'm up to 13,000 words on Car Wash. I think I will come in somewhere around 20,000 when finished.

February 23, 2009

Sometimes when I read I wish I could turn my inner critic off. Lately, when I read the book of someone else I find myself judging it like I do for a contest or for a critique or something instead of just reading for enjoyment.

Right now I am reading a book from someone that I would be willing to bet $10 this is one of their first efforts. In fact, Ive read several books from this particular publisher that strikes me that way so I do have to wonder if they are some sort of publishing mill, just churning out stories from anyone that submits. Probably unfair of me, but honestly the majority of this publisher's books are problematic.

This book shift points of view constantly (each paragraph), has a TSTL burglar on the first pages, an almost TSTL hero (at least I'm seriously questioning him), and blatant incorrect facts about the city it is set in. Now, I think this author probably has a lot of potential and could eventually be quite good. I would have liked to have seen more effort for this particular offering, though.

But this is what I mean. I can't just read a book for entertainment purposes. Even when I read excellent books I am left going, "Man, I wish I could write even half as good."

Sometimes, when I read in another genre, I can put aside the writer in me. Like when I read The Mist last year by Stephen King, I just let myself read it and be scared. True, I made the mistake of watching the movie after the book and going, UGH, you RUINED it. Do NOT see the movie. But then I think Stephen King is pretty much a genius and writers who say otherwise are just envious.

I just read The Elegant Corpse by A.M. Riley and I loved it. Truly one of my favorite books I've read in a long time, but even then I did have a small issue with a bit of a wanky POV near the end. For 90% of the book we are in one character's head, but then once in a while Ms. Riley gives us the other character's point of view, but not ever very deep, sort of almost like a narrator observing this character more than the other, if that makes sense. But it was very minor and I LOVED the book. I also just finished reading Fatal Shadows by Josh Lanyon. Really good book. I don't like first person in general but one thing is true, you can't slip into someone else's point of view by accident.

I guess because I did just read such excellent books perhaps I am just a tad too critical to be reading the book I am right now. I don't know. I just know it has potential and to me, so far, fails.

As writers, we sometimes wonder why one book resonates more with readers than another. While you create your story, you hope it will do well and be appreciated by your audience.

So far, I'd have to say I have certain books that have done better than others. For my Ellora's Cave releases both Another Chance and Perfect Man have done better than Stone of Wrath. Stone of Wrath has not done poorly by any means, it just hasn't sold as well as the other two. I think it might be the paranormal/mythical elements, but really I have no idea.

From Amber Quill by far the best so far has been At Long Last. The Squire and Pulling Away have also done well. Sorcerer's Lover, A Knight For All and It's Only Make Believe have done all right, but not spectacular. Right now, my most recent release, The Other Side, is doing pretty good. Not as well as At Long Last or Pulling Away, though. Don't know if that is because of the interracial elements or the storyline or the HFN ending. Who knows.

I think this happens to all authors. Some books are just more popular than others for some reason and often you never get to know.

So, this has me wondering how my next releases will do. Wanting Sam is my first heterosexual romance for Ellora's Cave and it has a lovely cover. I don't know how the m/f romances there do, but I think it will do well. My next release for Amber Quill, Jake's Regret is part of a Pax Collection, as was The Other Side. It is an interracial also so it will be interesting to see how it does compared to The Other Side.

My trip to Las Vegas has been postponed until April so I am around after all.

New Blog Name

Okay, so I've changed the name of my blog. I'll see if that just ends up confusing people or what. When I started writing the blog more than a year ago I hadn't published anything as Shawn. I was only publishing regular heterosexual historical romances. Since that time, my career has been devoted to Shawn Lane works and developing a following under that name. I'm not currently writing traditional romances and have no plans in the immediate future to do so. I have one more release coming in May from Wild Rose Press for that sort of romance, but that's it.

Thus, the name change. Really I've been talking up Shawn's stuff more for months anyway so it makes sense.

Got my edits for Most Likely To Succeed. Nothing too bad. I'm going to Sin City for the weekend, though, so I think I won't get to the edits until next week.

Finished another chapter of Car Wash. Already over 8,000 words, so I am guessing this will be a novella length rather than an Extended Amber Kiss (10,000 to 17,000 words). My next release from Amber Quill, Jake's Regret, is an Extended Amber Kiss.

February 15, 2009

So I started a new story. Yeah, yeah, I know. But the idea hit me and I wanted to get some basics down before I lost them. I still intend to set it aside for the most part until Car Wash is finished.

The new story is called, Never the One, and will involve detective partners, Tyler Vanderholt and Eric Boone, solving a series of murders in a Northern California town. Of course there will be some hot male love, too. Not sure who I will target as a publisher at this point, but I don't think it will be EC because it's going to be a few chapters before Tyler and Eric have sex.

Car Wash is going well, though. My plan is to have it completed by Mid-March.

February 14, 2009

Today is Valentine's Day. Hope everyone is able to spend it with their sweetie.

As for me I am making my Valentine dinner. I don't cook, so you see why this is a special occasion.

I am also working on my latest, Car Wash. That's it for me today.

I did blog at Amber Quill's blog today. Just promoting my newest releases.

I saw an episode today of the show, Cold Case. It was a good episode because it concerned the murder of a gay man and for the most part showed gay men in a good light (although there was a lot about HIV), but it ended with two gay men getting married. It was a lovely ceremony, actually, and ended with one half of the couple seeing the ghost of his murdered lover from 1983. It was a nice moment. I just wish they had allowed the gay couple getting married to share a wedding kiss. It seemed like such a cop out. Oh, well, I guess it's some progress.

Nothing earth shattering to report. Making good progress on Car Wash and I am hoping to be done significantly early from the deadline. I'm really liking my characters, Kevin and Michael.

February 04, 2009

Today I am able to happily announce I finished Most Likely To Succeed. The last chapter is off with my critique partner for final polishing. This one topped off at 26,000 words. I was wordy this time, I guess. Anyway, I think I did a bang up job if I do say so myself.

So, with that one just about done and off to my publisher (I still need to do the blurb/excerpt form), I can move on to Car Wash, starring Kevin Flaherty and Michael Bennett.

February 03, 2009

Just one chapter left on Most Likely To Succeed. I think it is shaping up to be pretty good. I hope to have it finished and off to my editor by the end of the week.

Then, I have absolutely decided to move on to starting Car Wash. It's the next one due and the only one I have a deadline on and since I hate missing deadlines I am starting this one early. All other works can begin after Car Wash is through.

ETA: Trust has a release date of April 29, 2009.
