Okay, today’s Wednesday Musings are an M/M Reader Meme.
I’m pretty uncomplicated so you can answer here in the comments if you like, answer them in your own blog if you have one, or don’t answer at all. Entirely up to you. How’s that for easy? I’ve of course included my own answers, because yes, I am a reader.
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Without Reservations by JL Langley
2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? Since I was a teen I’ve been more interested in men being with men than the chicks they were saddled with
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Son of a Gun by AM Riley
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? Mystery, horror, true crime, and one het author I still read because her heroes are to die for. (Jayne Ann Krentz)
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? Probably Without Reservations because there is something about that blond dude I just love, but this is a tough question. I prefer covers with faces for the most part though some faces are…strange
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc) I’m not really fond of ménages even if it is an M/M/M. I rather like monogamy. I’m not a huge Sci-Fi but will read it under the right circumstances (J.L. Langley), and I don’t want to read rape on the pages. It’s okay if it’s happened to a character in the past and has shaped who he is
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What? The Elegant Corpse by A.M. Riley. I’d love to re-visit those characters. There are definitely others but those stick in my mind at the moment
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? It doesn’t really matter to me if they get to it on the first date or the fifth date. It depends on the characters and where they are. It’s rare, though, that I’ve ever read a book and gone, “Oh, my God, they did it already?”
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? Nope. I feel cheated if the heroes in a book I have read only give each other hand jobs or oral sex. Sorry, I want everything
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? I’d feel cheated. This just happened to me in a book I read recently and I’ve read some others with a similar style written by some authors I really like and I think it sucks
#1: That was one of my earliest M/M reads, too.
ReplyDelete#6: Me, either!
#10: Oh yeah. That annoys me. I really, really hate finishing a book with the feeling that I'm being strung along to purchase more books. I recently read Thaw in Winter and Darling Brat (Thaw in Winter 1.5) and they totally read as if they'd started as a single book. Grrrrrrrr...
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Snow Angel by Sharon Maria Bidwell
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? I was sick of the TSTL women in M/F and after reading a few menages I fell in love with the dynamics of two men. Finally, a way to get rid of the "girl cooties" and still read romances. M/M, how I love thee! :D
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Icing On the Cake by Shayla Kersten
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? I haven't read much out of the M/M world in over 3 years. I do have a couple of series (TBDB and Vampire Huntress) that I'd like to finish one day though.
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? I don't have a favorite.
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc) I don't like Yaoi. Sci-fi, Fantasy and Historicals are nice sometimes but aren't favorites. I love contemporaries, shifters, vampires and paranormals.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What? If I really fall in love with the characters I always want more. I'm greedy that way. But, I can't think of a specific one now.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? However it works best for the story whether it's the first time they meet or weeks later.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? No. I love a good plot and character development is important as well but if there's no sex I will not be happy. I've read a few books where it was mostly fade to black and that works ok as long as some part of the action is detailed. Yes, I'm a perv. ;)
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? I'm not happy at that kind of ending. I recently read the Deadly series by Victor J. Banis and the first book ends with the two protags not together. If I didn't already have all of the books at that time I would have been so pissed. But since I was able to pick up the 2nd one right away and see them getting together I let it go. But yeah, I want them together at the end. Definitely!
Thanks for playing along, Chris and Lily.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hear you on the Deadly series, Lily. I've read those myself. If I wasn't in love with the characters I would not continue. One of the books I just read, listed on my meme had an unsatisfying ending. I have a feeling there are more books involved. At least I hope so.
The name Thaw in Winter sounds familiar. I wonder if I read that one. lol.
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Hmmm...might have been, oh, I don't know. I've read tons.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? Probably the first time I got a boner watching the neighbor, Jimmy, next door.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Another Dream by Addison Albright
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? Some horrot with Milo
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? Anything with a guy who looks lickable
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc) Rape and menage.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What? Oh any of the books I put on my keeper shelf.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? I don't care as long they do it.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? Hell no. I want lots of sex. That's what I want in real life, too, or is that TMI?
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated?
Cheated and pissed, but this is happening more and more all the time.
1. First M/M book I ever read was The Assignment by Evangeline Anderson.
ReplyDelete2. Other than most of them have fantastic storylines, not really sure. After The Assignment, read Tin Star and Lawyers in Love and the rest is history and loving each page.
3. The Vampire and the Man Eater by GA Hauser finished last night and started Common Powers by Lynn Lorenz today. Amen for USPS and fast delivery, :)
4. Vampires, paranormals, some historicals and the writings of a few favorite authors: C. Harris, L. Hamilton and E. Holly.
5. Don't have a favorite cover but loved Brindisi's Bedfellows so much had it as my desktop for the longest time.
6. Would rather not read about a rape happening but being referred to as part of the characters past is fine.
7. Cripes, so many books I would love to read a sequel to and so little space for the titles, lol. Have this problem of loving the characters and just wanting more, :)
8. Does not matter to me and as long as it goes with a storyline it can be on page 5 or 10 but best happen before I get to the last page, lol.
9. Do not like stories that do not have the characters having intercourse but worse than that is when the scene goes from hot and heavy to the next morning and nothing in between. Read one story like that and felt totally let down by the author.
10. I would feel cheated. Don't mind buying the next book to continue their relationship but want them together by the last page at least working on their HEA.
Sharon
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Good question! I've been reading them since I was a freshman in high school. I'm not sure which was the first.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? It's good to read that homosexual people get their happily ever after just like straight people.
3) What is the last M/M book you read?
Call Me Sir II by Stormy Glenn
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? I read a lot of biographies about artist and art history books in general.
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? I don't know that I have a favorite cover. I get tired of M/M covers sometimes. Yes, the naked men look terrific, but I'd like so see some men kissing or just holding each other.
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc)
I won't read menages or rape. Thanks again to all of my internet family for warning me about Wicked Game! That would have been a disaster.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What? I really loved Drawn Together by ZA Maxfield. I would have liked to have read more about them.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? I prefer they don't immediately jump in bed, but realistically I know that I'm the lone ranger on this issue.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? NO! That makes me think the author doesn't really love what they write, or believe in same sex HEA's.
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Yes. If I find out about it beforehand I won't read the book.
1)What was the first M/M book you ever read? I don’t remember if it was the FIRST, but I think it was With Love by J.L. Langley.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? Well, I’ve always been a big reader. I used to read straight romances for a long time until we discovered gay romances.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? It was Quinn’s Heart by Cassandra Gold. It was okay, not that fab.
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? If I do read a different genre it’s usually because I’m pressured to do so! LOL! I basically stick to what I love to read and that’s two men falling in love and getting it on!
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? Hmm…I really don’t think I have one. I agree with our young Drew. We need more interaction between the heroes on the covers.
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc)
You know I am very anti-menage books. Grr! I hate them with a passion!
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What?
Just one? Angel Face! I have two, so I’m breaking a rule…imagine that! Of course I’m going to say Car Wash, but thankfully you give us freebies of Kev, so I can deal with not having a sequel…maybe…lol. I really loved The Curtis Reincarnation. I’ve heard a rumor that he’s planning on writing a sequel so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? As long as it fits the plot, I’m okay with them jumping into bed pretty quickly. If I had to chose I would have them wait a while, but a lot of times it doesn’t fit the story.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? HELL NO! I won’t read it if there is no sex.
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Cheated! Isn’t that why we read romances? I don’t get the HFN endings at all. They SUCK!
Thanks Sharon, Drew and Shaynie for you answers! Muah! Love you all. Great answers.
ReplyDelete1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? The first homoerotic romance I read alone was by Sean Michael. This first homoerotic romance book I read with Shayne is With Love by JL Langley.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? Are kidding? You have to ask? Lol!
3) What is the last M/M book you read? We’re reading In Bear’s country by Kieran Kelly.
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? I like everything, but am addicted to romance.
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? A Strong Hand by Catt Ford.
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc) I (WE) don’t read ménages. They’re forbidden in this house!
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What?
I’m always sad for books to come to an end! I would love to see one of my BF’s books become a sequel, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, that’s Andi’s Got Mistletoe?.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? Depends on the story.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? NO! I hope this isn’t another trend that is about to happen. If readers or writers do not want to read about gay sex and love, don’t buy or write the book!
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? This is another trend that sucks. We won’t read it.
You know what particularly strikes me about this thread? There are definitely common themes arising in the answers - we don't like rapes or menages, and we hate serials. Maybe publishers should read this. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thoughts, Jack. And of course I know why you are interested in the genre, sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteI know I agree about Got M. Maybe she could do a free story on her blog or her website when she gets it.
You are right, Chris, there are definite patterns here. Quite interesting.
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Our friend Shayne recommended several books of yours to Josh and I. After talking with both Shayne and Jack I read Perfect Man and Trust. I can’t remember which one I read first.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? Shayne and Jack went on and on about them. Once I started reading them I realized how much I enjoyed reading about two men who fall in love. I think it brings out the romantic in both Josh and I.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Blood Vows book 1 and 2 by Evangeline Anderson.
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? I love mysteries, biographies and horror books.
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? Secrets, Skins and Leather by Sean Michael. Love that man in a corset!
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc? Menages. Even if it’s from a writer I respect. If they write it, I won’t read it.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What?
Not really. If it ends well and happily, I can let the characters go. I do love the free stories and updates you do though.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter? It doesn’t matter to me. As long as it ends well, I’m good with it.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? Why would I read a romance with no intercourse between heroes? L.O.L
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Cheated. I avoid it if possible.
Thanks, Brent, Muah! as Shaynie would say
ReplyDelete1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? I think it was either a J.L. Langley book or an Ally Blue book.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? I got tired of traditional M/F romances and looked for something different.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Only for him by Shawn Lane.
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? No
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? Tabloid Star by TA Chase
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc? Menages.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What?
Too many to say.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter?
As long as they fall in love, it doesn’t matter when.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? NO!
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Depends on the series. I liked the Deadly series, but I felt cheated when I finished the first book. I basically don’t like a series that ends on a negative note at all. Love my HEAs!
Also, JL Langley is a gateway drug. ;)
ReplyDeleteGabbi! We missed you, sweetie!
ReplyDeleteYes, plainly, Langley is a favorite of alot of us
ReplyDelete1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? I’ve always read Gay Erotica, but the first romance book I read was the Tin Star by Langley.
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? It’s nice to read romances about people like myself.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Car Wash by Shawn Lane
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? Cookbooks, Horror, Fantasy
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? No favorite.
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc) Menages
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What? No
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter?
I prefer they get to know each other some first.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes?
FUCK NO
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Cheated.
Thanks, Shawn!
ReplyDeleteI've been recovering from a bad car accident and haven't been online much. I appreciate the welcome back!
Is there still alot of drama at goodreads? I've thought about returning, but I got sick of the drama.
I missed my friends. =P
I'm so sorry, Gabbi. Shayne and I have worried! Hope you are doing better.
ReplyDeleteWe decided to ignore the drama and most of us are back and just talking to each other, talking to our own little cirlce. We'd love to have you back
1) What was the first M/M book you ever read? Open to Possibilities by Carol Lynn. Yes, it was a menage, and hey! I heard that evil hissing from some of you. LOL
ReplyDelete2) What attracted you to the genre in the first place? I had started reading menage erotic romances because I was looking for something different, and I found that I was much more interested in the heroes' relationship with each other, and wishing the chick would just go out to the store and not come back.
3) What is the last M/M book you read? Iron Man by Kyann Waters
4) Do you read other genres? If so, what? Yes, I read some m/f historical romance, but not nearly as much as I used to. I read primarily m/m romances now.
5) What is your favorite M/M cover? I'm partial to The Englor Affiar and My Fair Captain, and Diving in Deep. What can I say? I have a thing for man-titty ;)
6) Are there some elements you just don’t care for? For example (ménage, shape-shifters, historicals, paranormals, etc? I don't much get into sci-fi (unless it's by JL Langley) or futuristics, and I do not like horror or heavy suspense. No rape or hard core life-style BDSM, either.
7) Is there a book you read that you wished had a sequel? What?
Um...that would be every book I've fallen in love with.
8) How soon do you want your guys to have sex? Does it matter?
Depends on the characters. If they feel like they are dilly-dallying for too long, then I'll start grumbling that he just needs to do him already. But if the pacing fits the characters, then it doesn't much matter as long as they eventually do it.
9) Do you like M/M stories that have no actual intercourse between the heroes? In general, emphatically no! But, I have read 1 book I love that did not have any actual intercourse. They did other stuff, just not the actual deed. And oddly enough, I didn't feel totally cheated. The guys weren't ready for full-on intercourse by the end of the book and if they would have knocked boots, it would have felt off.
10) If you get to the end of a book and the two protagonists are not officially together, but there is a hint of maybe another book, do you feel satisfied or cheated? Totally cheated!!! The guys have to at least get a happily for now ending, where they are either together in a monogomous relationship, or have decided at the end of the book that they are going to be monogomous.
It's good to see you again, Gabbi! I'm so sorry to hear about the car accident, and I hope you are feeling much better.
ReplyDeleteThe Elegant Corpse by A.M. Riley. I’d love to re-visit those characters.
ReplyDeleteI so agree - I want me my own Roger..
E.H>
maybe we can beg A.M, EH, lol
ReplyDeleteHead over to her blog... :)
ReplyDeleteI saw that, Chris, but it looks like she already has her hands filled with other works in progress (I had wondered about Bill and Christopher, interesting)
ReplyDelete
