Pull up a chair and get to know every single one. I’d love to introduce you to my hero...
When I decided to include my most recent release with Evernight, Figuring it Out, I wanted to do something a little different. You see in Figuring it Out the POV is all my hero’s, Avery’s, since I wrote the story in first person. So, for the Book Boyfriend hop I thought it would be cool to focus on Avery’s hero, Joe.
I waited outside the drama class one day for Jennings. Avery.
I’d never even heard that name before until one day in a class the teacher called the name.
Avery.
I really liked it. And I liked the kid who had it even more. He was beautiful. Like in an androgynous way. Dark hair, dark eyes. Like a starving artist or a poet. I wanted to know him the minute I saw him.
It wasn’t easy being gay for someone like me. Not that I was out in high school. I definitely wasn’t. Couldn’t be. I was a jock and jocks weren’t gay. Except I was. And I wanted Avery.
I’d begun to think he would never come out of that damn class. I’d been leaning against a wall next to the path when he finally came out. Alone. Great. Because if he’d come out with one of his weird actor friends no way was I sticking around.
I tried to play it cool by not walking forward to greet him. I didn’t want him to guess how much I really wanted to see him. But he had slowed his pace to a near crawl and I began to get impatient. Just when I was about to go to him after all, he reached me.
Straightening away from the wall, I stepped into the path in front of him.
“Uh, hi.” He backed up a step.
“Avery, right?” Like I didn’t know his name. Like I hadn’t been writing it over and over in my notebook.
Avery nodded, looking like he might bolt at any moment.
I glanced toward the drama class. “Are you part of that school production of Cats?”
“Yeah.”
“You’re into that, huh?”
“Yeah,” he said again.
Obviously Avery was the shy type since I couldn’t seem to get more than one word out of him. His fingers clutched his book bag tight and he held it in front of him like a shield.
Up close like this, Avery was even more breath taking. Hot. I tried not to stare too much at his little plump lips, but I wanted to taste them. I dreamed of those lips.
“You gay?” I don’t know why I asked him that. I was pretty sure he was. If he’d said no I don’t know what I would do. But I guess maybe I needed the confirmation.
“Yeah.”
I exhaled. “That’s cool.”
“Is it?”
“Sure. Listen, I wanted a favor.” Might as well get to the point. And the point was making sure I’d see as much of Avery as possible. Like maybe every day.
“You’re a brainiac or something, right?”
“I don’t know about that.”
“Sure you are. You get A’s I bet.” I risked a glance at his lips again. It was damn hard to think with them pursed like they were. “Anyway, I was hoping you could help me out with English Lit. I pretty much suck.”
Which that much was true. I hated that class. It bored me to tears and I was barely passing.
“I’m sure you aren’t as bad as you think,” he said. “But the truth is, I don’t do other students’ work for them. Sorry.”
I smiled. “Avery, I’m not asking you to do my work.”
“No?”
“I want you to tutor me. Help me get my grade up.”
“Oh? Oh.” He nodded. “That I can do.”
And so he did. He agreed to tutor me twice a week in the school library after classes. I wanted more than two days, but I went with it. Unfortunately, Avery was all business and actually thought I wanted to be tutored. I did get a B in English Lit but I never really got to know him because he decided I was there to learn or something.
The tutoring ended and Avery moved on. I still thought about him. But then he got a boyfriend, Brett. I hated Brett and wanted to punch him.
Avery was supposed to be mine. He just didn’t seem to know that.

He is apart of Cats. The hero trait that I love the most is selflessness. In spite of everything, if the man is selfless it's unnervingly attractive. I also do love that alpha male air where they control anything and all other men shake in their wake.
