So, recently I saw that a newly released book had the exact same name I had coming up in a book. I mean exactly not just similar. Same first name, same last name. What the hell are the odds of that?
Now this character was in a book I had started last summer well before this other author's book came out so I didn't see her character and subconsciously name mine the same. Nor did she see mine since I only finished mine recently and it doesn't come out until March. This character is a secondary character in the book coming out in March but I am in the process of working on his story.
To say I was dismayed at the same exact name is an understatement. I swore a blue streak. I had liked my character's name. Apparently so did the other author. lol.
Anyway, fortunately, I was able to change his first name in the book coming out in March and in the work in progress. I'm somewhat disappointed but it's not the end of the world and in fact it might be for the best since the name that was changed is a Name Du Jour of the gay genre right now. I've seen it popping up all over even though, as I said, I created him in the summer of last year.
I've come to the conclusion in this business I better be prepared to change names, locations, even plots. This time it was just a name. And after all, what's in a name.

Yeah, I'm Still Here
No, I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. I'm still here and diligently working. Not on what I'm supposed to be writing, but, well, I'm writing.

Galaxy's Heart, Sutter's Bay 3 and Other News
I have finished the third Sutter's Bay story, Galaxy's Heart. Yes, ahead of the end of February. I was determined.
I've got a release date of May 15, 2011. So, that is good news.
I'm now moving on to my Postcards From Paradise story which will take my hero, Billy, to Ireland on vacation. The tentative title is The Way to Forever. That's subject to change.

The Impersonator Contest
Almost forgot, lol. Leave a comment for a chance to win. And you know, I think this looks vaguely like someone to me. Hmmm....winner posted Saturday, February 19, 2011.
Blurb: After being dumped by his boyfriend, Benjamin Pomeroy has hot club sex with a gorgeous new employee at the same Las Vegas hotel where Ben works as an Elvis impersonator. And shortly thereafter, Ben abruptly loses his job when the new CEO, Maxwell Orton, decides that Elvis no longer fits the hotel’s image.
Facing the grueling prospect of locating a steady job, Ben needs extra cash to tide himself over. To help the situation, Ben’s brother Phillip, also employed at the hotel, offers him a paying proposition—swap identities with Phillip at a masquerade ball being given by Maxwell Orton for the hotel’s higher echelon employees. Attendance is mandatory, but Phillip has made other important plans that he refuses to cancel. To Ben, the idea of switching places with his brother seems preposterous, yet harmless enough. Besides, it’s easy money, right? And after all, he’ll be wearing a mask the entire time, so no one will learn of the deception.
But the masquerade doesn’t go as planned when Ben discovers, to his complete shock, that Maxwell is actually the sexy hotel employee whom he entertained privately at the local gay club...

Getting Closer
Making progress on Galaxy's Heart. Hit the over 15,000 word mark today and still going. I suspect I'll be over 20,000 words by finish so definitely in the novella length for Amber Quill. And now have fewer doubts I'll be unable to finish by the end of the month.

Story Behind the Story - Trust
I'm copying Ava March today and doing a story behind the story for Trust
Stats: Submitted partial of Trust to Loose Id on September 10, 2008. Received request for full ms on September 21, 2008. Received email from editor saying they would want some revisions, but would consider looking at ms again after those were done on October 20, 2008. Rather than re-write a story I was pretty satisfied with, I chose to submit to a publisher I had already worked with, Ellora’s Cave, on October 21, 2008. Ellora’s Cave offered contract November 07, 2008. Trust was released on April 29, 2009.
Little Known Fact – When it came time for edits, my editor at EC asked for more sex. Other than Brad’s uncompleted blowjob in the prologue the first full sex scene didn’t occur until Chapter four (around that, it’s been a while since I looked at the book). Given the facts of their breakup and Justin’s car crash injuries I was dismayed to say the least at this. How was I supposed to get Brad and Justin to do it any sooner?
My editor suggested a flashback and though that was not my preference, I wrote the scene of Brad and Justin’s first encounter in college. I thought there was plenty of sex already in Trust and adding another scene would not add to the story. I wrote it anyway.
Extremely Little Known Fact – I debated having Justin catch Brad in full anal sex when he came into the locker room looking for Brad. I ditched this idea because I thought the uncompleted blowjob was going to be hard enough to get Justin and readers over let alone going for the whole thing.
How Did I get the idea for the book – Actually it came from a song. 38 Special’s “Second Chance”. If you haven’t heard the song it’s about a guy asking his girl for a second chance because his heart needs it after he has cheated on her. I both really like that song and it makes me angry at the same time. It brings out an emotional response in me and I wanted to do that in a book. And I chose to make Brad a paramedic, a selfless hero, to make him more likeable to the reader, who might consider giving him that second chance just as he hopes Justin will.
If I could edit the book now would I change anything – Yeah, I had a reason for making Brad celibate for the entire time after his breakup with Justin. I wanted him to torture himself, I wanted it to be mental and messed up. But I did get some reviews where certain reviewers doubted Brad would be celibate for that many years so I would have either explained it better or perhaps changed it. Really though I was pretty happy with the book.
Will there be a sequel – Never. I gave them their white picket fence and the characters are under contractual obligation to EC.
Misc stuff- Trust is one of my more controversial books, if not the most. Some readers loved it, and especially loved Brad. Others just couldn’t get past the cheating, no way, no how.
Trust ended up being my last published book with EC. I had some really good experiences there and some successful books, but sometimes there comes a parting of ways. I didn’t want to write the kinds of books EC wanted to publish and vice versa. It took me a while to come to the conclusion that the two of us just no longer suit, but I have now and have moved on.

Starting to Panic
So I realize I'm looking at the calendar and having heart palpitations.
Now I admit I don't do a ton of writing on weekends, I'm a during the week writer for the most part. This past weekend I managed to write 4 paragraphs.
Still, I am panicking. I am busy for the next three Saturdays. All that's left of February. And I am going to be perfectly honest in saying I am no where near finished with Galaxy's Heart. Since I really want to be finished by the end of month you can see where this is concerning.
My postcards from paradise story is due April 01. I've started it but barely. The bulk of it will begin March 01, thus why I need to be finished with Galaxy's Heart if I have any hope of getting it in the publishing schedule before summer. I'm not even sure I can write Billy's story (with a nod to Chris for the veri name for one of the heroes from my paradise story) in a month so I am already cutting myself short.
And March, may I say, is becoming absurdly busy already with plans. This does not comfort me.
Can I get Galaxy's Heart, Sutter's Bay 3, done by February 28?
Can I get my title-less paradise story starring Billy done by April 01?
I am beginning to doubt and therefore cue frenetic music.

A Minor Update
It would seem the middle of the country is bracing for a giant storm. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they are saying.
At least if it is that bad I hope you get to stay at home where you can put the heat on and drink nice warm drinks.
As for me, same old, same old. Working away on the latest WIP. Drew wanted me to post to my blog again so thus, here I am. I'm only working on one at a time this time, which I feel must be different for me as generally I'm always poking at something else while the main one brews. This time Galaxy's Heart has my full attention.
So, that's the latest and the greatest from sunny Southern California (and yes, I did have to get that in).
